Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you must offer him your sweater as well.
The obvious and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump arise in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
